Inside the Saturday pet food packing shift

Two tonnes of dry food, blankets and flea treatment: meet the volunteers who turn donated supplies into labelled shelter parcels every weekend.

At nine on a Saturday morning the warehouse doors open, the kettle goes on and someone puts on the radio. By ten there are twenty volunteers at the tables, and by lunchtime two tonnes of donated pet supplies have been sorted, checked and packed.

More than boxes

Every shelter parcel is weighed and labelled, and every bag of food is checked for its date. A typical parcel holds dry food, tinned food for sick and older animals, flea and worm treatment, blankets and a few toys. One parcel feeds around ten dogs for a week.

Many of the volunteers have adopted rescue animals themselves. "I pack every box thinking of my own dog," one of them told us. "He was in a shelter like these once."
